We just got back into internet land.

It's been a long journey.

We've been out in the wild land of northern Kenya since camp ended at RVA.
We've been traveling in a huge blue four wheel drive people mover that PK dubbed The Hume-n-ator that looks like a really tall garbage truck with seats at the top and open sides. We used a hired company called ACTS that does this kind of thing in East Africa for missions trips like ours. They have tents and a portable kitchen, so they get us to wherever we need to go and provide food and lodging all along the way. They also provide a guide that travels up top with us to answer any questions about the land, the culture, the animals, or whatever, and he also serves as a translator.
We traveled north from RVA in Kijabe, near Nairobi, all the way up to Kurungu which is near South Horr, just east of Lake Turkana in Northern Africa. It was a 16 hour journey one way, mostly off-road. On the way up, we spent the first night at the Bomen Hotel where the paved roads end in a town called Isiolo.

Once we got to Kurungu we stayed with Rick and Kari Maples where they have been working with the Samburu tribe for 6 years. Rick is Mike Maples' brother. This is a Dik Dik. It's probably the animal that we saw the most along the road on our journey. One of the warriors caught one and brought it for us to hold while we were at the Maples' house.

We stayed in our tents in their front yard, but participated every day with cultural events that were happening while we were there. The 15 year-old son of one of the local believers was getting circumcised, the definitive coming-of-age ceremony in their culture. The ceremonies last for three days and include lots of Chai (boiled goat milk with tea leaves and a smokey flavor), bright colors, slaughtered goats, and dancing.
Andre, the boy's father, is a close friend of the Maples, and someone whom PK has gotten to know quite well. Andre had even named his new son after PK. He was born shortly after last year's trip.
Once at Kurungu, we traveled around locally on Rick's Land Rover Defender.

In afternoons we ran organized recreation for the young men (high school age) while some of us played with the little kids.
On the last afternoon PK told the story of the woman at the well and explained to them how Jesus is the true living water who satisfies so that we will never thirst again.

We got to each spend one night sleeping with a family in their little huts.

We also visited The Samburu National Park.
It's not a game park like we went to in Swaziland, but rather more like our national parks in the US. It's just a huge open area, the size of Sequoia National Park that you drive around in on gnarly dirt roads. There are rivers and streams and crazy places with wild animals that come right up to your vehicle. We camped next to the crocodile infested river. Some elephants crossed the river and walked through our camp last night, and this morning we had to fight off nearly 20 baboons who kept stealing our stuff and getting all aggressive.
The drive has been bumpy and dusty and uncomfortable, but for sure an adventure.

The Samburu are beautiful people, full of color, and they are very friendly and open to strangers. I've enjoyed every minute that we spent with them.

So far the highlight of the trip has been the night-church that we got to be a part of in the Samburu tribe. There were about 30 kids and adults who gathered together in the dark under the stars and started singing call and response type of worship songs, and then one of their story-tellers, probably one of the only believers in this particular small group, since it's fairly new, told a section of stories from the old testament. This is how they start new churches. Since it is an oral culture, and story telling is huge to them, they start at the beginning, and work their way through the bible, when they get to Jesus and the cross, the people are usually eager to choose to believe and follow Him!

Interesting fact: even in all the incredibly primitive places that we've been, some of which don't even have running water, there has been cell phone coverage over the entire way!

Kenya 1

We made it to Amsterdam, had fun exploring the city, and now 30 hours later, we've made it to Nairobi, Kenya. We're staying tonight at an AIM Missionary Guest house place, kind of like The Juniper Tree in Thailand, except it's all one huge house. We had thanksgiving dinner with about 40 other missionaries. I got to pet a cheetah this afternoon, and got licked by a giraffe. Tomorrow we drive out to Rift Valley Academy and start camp. We're all really tired. Pray for us that we would get good sleep tonight and be energized for tomorrow.

Fresh Basil

I bought a Basil plant from Trader Joe's so that I'd have fresh Basil for cooking tasty meals. It's been hanging in there despite the freezing cold window and lack of direct sunlight. I do take it outside on occasional warm afternoons to find a spot of sun for it to soak in.

This is seriously one of the best deals at TJ's. It's like $2.99, and will keep you with a fresh supply of basil for months on end. Way better than that dried stuff that costs you $4.50 a jar.

First Snow

This is from the first snow that we had October 29. It didn't snow here at Hume, or if it did, then it didn't hit the ground. We saw this driving on the way out towards Cherry Gap. (We went down to Fresno to see the No Town Allstars take on the V-Town Derby Dames at the Roller Derby!)

I'm so excited for winter to be here. It's been cold enough, in the lower 20s each night, and not higher than 50 during the day.

Eat More Bread

I decided that I would try to bake a different loaf of bread each week this fall. I love having a big kitchen for baking and cooking, and plenty of friends to share the food with!

So far I've made Zucchini Pecan bread, two loaves of pumpkin bread, Country French Bread, and Pizza. I guess Pizza's not really a loaf, but it still falls in the bread category. This week I'll try an Artisan French Bread.

I've been getting the recipes from Allrecipes.com, and then been making variations as necessary. I don't think I've followed any of them exactly. I didn't have wheat germ for the pizza dough, the temps and times couldn't be followed exactly for the rising of the french bread, Icrushed the cloves myslef and added allspice to the Pumpkin Loaf, and I used half brown sugar and made nut substitutions on the Zucchini Loaf.

Here's the Zucchini Pecan Loaf sitting on a make-shift cooling rack of knife handles.Since Jocey's allergic to walnuts, I substituted pecans. In the background you can see what's left of the French Bread. It didn't rise like I expected, probably because it was only 60 degrees in my kitchen, and the (faux?) granite counter tops tend to hold the freezing cold night-time temperatures. It still tasted great, but ended up more like a Focaccia bread.

I'm currently at the Dallas Fort-worth Airport, Terminal D, my preferred terminal. I'm sitting in the Samsung entertainment lounge on the nearly abandoned second flour mezzanine above the shopping area and restaurants. There is a tower of flat screen TVs showing off Samsung's products, but I'm ignoring those while I enjoy the comfortable overstuffed leather chairs. There are also a few Coleman cots and clean blankets that someone has stowed behind the chairs in case I want take a nap.

It's no Singapore Airport, but I'm making the best out of the situation.

We're here at the La Montaña offices in San Jose. I just finished teaching seminars all day.

Costa Rica (From Day 2)

It’s always strange to arrive an a foreign place in the dark, you wake up and everything is new, new sights, new sounds…

Yesterday, the first day here at La Montaña, I woke up early and spent some time alone with God just outside my door. Then I had breakfast with Joe Pent and some of the other staff at the dinning area. We sat outside drinking coffee and getting to know each other a little better as we talked through the rest of the week. We also talked philosophy of running camp, working with the churches, working with different cultures.

I met Esteban and Otto, the sound and video guys. I’ve been working mostly with Esteban teaching him how to use the cameras, and how to use Final Cut Express. He’s been using iMovie for the last year, and he seems to learn quickly. He speaks broken English, but we get along just fine. He makes fun of how lazy I am with my Spanish. He knows that I can understand much of what is said in Spanish, but he says that I’m lazy with speaking it myself. He’s probably right.

The camp that they are running this weekend is pretty much just a guest group. It has all the challenges of running a guest group that we have up at Hume. It’s interesting seeing the staff having to rearrange the schedule, and get slightly frustrated at things not running efficiently. And, here I am making a weekend video for a guest group. I don’t know very many things more difficult, but then I’m trying to teach four guys who don’t speak much English how to shoot video for a totally different kind of camp that they run fully themselves in a different season. Plus, we still have to get this video done. So, I’ve been shooting about half the time trying as best I can to explain how I am shooting and why. The other half of the time, I put the camera in their hands and give them instructions or specific shots to try. I’ve showed two of the guys the basics of editing. They are taking turns going through the footage and gathering all the good clips onto one timeline. Tonight we’ll actually edit the whole video. Hopefully I can have them do as much as possible of the work. It will be slower, but I know that they’ll learn by doing. Otherwise, if we run too short on time, I’ll just have them watch what I do so that they have an example.

Unfortunately I don’t have great material to work with. The guest group has mostly been doing teaching times and seminars. It’s a group of young adults being hosted by the Full Gospel Men’s Group. There are lots of spontaneous testimonial times. The meetings always end up going longer than planned. The La Montaña staff was supposed to run Team Building exercises (The call them riddles) for most of the morning, but the meeting was two and half hour late, so they rushed through them right before lunch in less than an hour. I wasn’t able to even get to all of them before it was over. It rained most of the afternoon, but we filmed their High Ropes Course, (Cuerdas Altas) and then some swimming, roe swing, and diving up at the lake. The ropes course is beautifully set deep in the rain forest. It was like walking into another world, or maybe just like taking the path at the wild animal park that starts just bellow the Orangutan enclosure and ends over by the elephants.

Right now, while one of the guys is working on editing the video, I’m watching Esteban teach somebody else what I taught him yesterday about the camera. There’s something especially exciting about that. It means he understands it on a deep enough level to be able to explain it in his own words, in his own language, in a way that somebody who doesn’t already know video can understand. It’s only been one day, and already I’m confident that they will continue to learn and grow in their use of these cameras and their video production in general.

On Monday, we’ll be going down to San Jose to their main office (just like Hume’s Fresno office) where I’ll be teaching video seminars all day to several volunteers that they hope will be involved at different times in their video productions at camp over the next year. In the morning I’ll be covering general philosophy and concepts in regards to making videos for camp, and in the afternoon I’ll focus on specific skills with hands-on exercises.

Costa Rica (From Day 1)

After a long day of travel I’m finally here at La Montaña in Costa Rica. I’m in a very nice room with the beautiful sounds of the jungle pouring in from outside, filling the room. Joe said that if I sit outside early in the morning, I might see a monkey or two in the trees. He said it’s a great place to spend time with God, and that it seems to spiritually bring him close to what it must have been like in the Garden of Eden, surrounded by the overwhelming presence of God’s creation. I’m looking forward to it. Right now it’s just dark outside, though with the sounds and smells, there’s plenty that my imagination can see.

It sounds like I’m going to hit the ground running and have all the busy, full days on the front end of my visit here. We have a Men’s Conference this weekend, and then days planned out to spend time teaching their staff, then working with them to make a rules video for their “summer” season of camp, which starts in November. Then, next weekend I’ll get some time to relax and tour around a little bit.

The trip was largely uneventful. I spent the night last night at Andy’s new apartment in Fresno, and then he graciously drove me to the airport at 5:45am after dropping my car off at the Fresno Hume office. When we were about to leave in the faint light of morning we realized that we were wearing matching Hume:SD shirts.

On the first flight, I had a middle seat and both people on either side of my slept the whole time. I just read the whole time. The first thing that I did when I arrived in Dallas was to ride the complete loop on the Skytrain stopping at each terminal to see what made each of them unique. Terminal D was by far the best, with high arching glass ceilings and two story indoor restaurant/shop areas. It was clearly the newest terminal. (Unless Terminal E came later, but they chose to model it after the late seventies utilitarian style cues of Terminals A-C) Actually, come to think of it, the whole airport was like LAX, just spread out bigger and wider over miles of open land with Terminal D, corresponding to the Tom Bradley International Terminal that we have at LAX. The whole airport was pretty boring except for a few fun interactive art sculptures in Terminal D (the kind that you have to walk through to get where you want to go).

There were many white, middle-American-looking travelers. It seemed that 95% of the non-white people that I saw were airport employees. I noticed lots of army people everywhere. I even stumbled across two USO events happening in the terminals! The funny thing was that they ran the audio feed for these shows over the annoncement speaker system in the terminals; the boarding announcements would always override whatever else was going on. One of them even had the National Anthem being sung, which made it especially funny because people where awkwardly standing, but not sure if they should be since they couldn’t see what was going on from where they had been sitting. Most of the people near me sat down when they heard the first “LAST CALL FOR BOARDING GROUPS 1-2 ON FLIGHT 6128 WITH FINAL DESTINATION, NEW YORK”, interrupting our beloved national anthem.

I almost got some Fried Chicken at a Popeye’s, or a fatty Big Mac at MacDonald’s just to be able to say that I tried some local culture. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I ended up getting a bagel sandwhich at Einstein’s and then satisfied my Mid-West fix with a Styrofoam cup of Dunkin Doughnuts Coffee. It tasted like gas station coffee, and the DD reminded me of Timmy Horton’s in Canada. I think I liked Timmy’s better. Karley, I’ll still have to believe that the Dunkin Doughnuts that you have in Wisconsin serve different coffee than the on at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport.

The flight from Dallas to San Jose, Costa Rica was on a larger plane that was not full. I had a whole open row to myself in the back. I think I fell asleep before we even got on the runway, because I remember waking up to hear the captain say that we had reached cruising altitude and somehow I already had my seatbelt on. I read most of the rest of the flight.

I made it through customs just fine, my bags went through the xray, but they either weren’t looking at the screen or they didn’t care. I was a little nervous, so it was a relief. When I got out on the street I didn’t notice anybody with a sign for me, and didn’t notice anybody that might be trying to notice me, so I borrowed a cell phone from a friendly stranger and called Joe Pent’s home. His wife answered, said he was there, then hung up to call him on his cell phone. Before he could answer my friendly stranger friend started yelling in Spanish for anybody from Campemento Christiano. It worked. Joe turned around, saw me, and we had a nice hour long ride in the cloud forest getting to know each other.

I’m looking forward to a good week.

A New Adventure

Karley and I recently bought these two Honda CT70 motorcycles.
We thought it would be a fantastic project to work on together, and super fun to have around camp.
Mine is the blue one, a 1973. Karley's is the yellow one, a 1972.
Jay also has one, his is Candy Topaz Orange and a 1971 or so.

Jay and I will be taking ours down to San Diego next week to use on campus while we run camp for Hume.
Karley and I are in the process of getting them street legal so we can cruise down to the cove whenever we feel like it. They're the perfect size bike for teaching our girlfriends how to ride, and until then.... Well, they do have buddy pegs.

A Weekend in Sacramento

We went to Sacramento this weekend to visit Mary Beth K., Andy C., and Nina B..
It was a great weekend, with lots of walking.
Saturday started out with breakfast at The Tower Cafe with really rich french toast and a greek omolet for Joce and I, then we drove closer to downtown found free parking near O st. and 15th. Then walked to the capitol, saw a massive Quincenera, then down the capitol mall, over and through a real mall (shopping), through old town to the river, panned for gold and went to the bathroom (not in that order) at the museum, then down the river walk next to the water back to Tower Bridge, then we sat and watched fire fighters run in and out of the Wells Fargo Building while the alarms kept going off. (We thought of you, Rebecca.) Then, we walked all the way back past the the capitol, through the park and gardens, the war memorial, towards midtown, looking for a Chase bank. We finally found one on the far side of midtown, and then went back down to Old Soul and got good coffee and a fresh baguette. Then, we sat there for a while while we waited for the Second Saturday Art walk event to begin. All the vendors and displayers of art/junk/live bands/whatever were setting up, literally around us. I think our tall friend Andy helped hang a few pieces of art on the wall in the coffee shop for a silent auction.

After much more walking around and meeting up with some of MB's friends, Antique shops, Art galleries, a fantastic Local High School's photography exhibit, and some free lighters from a place the sells medical marijuana, then we went to Mikuni Sushi with Nina and friends.
After that Joce MB, Andy, and I went back to the shopping mall theater and watched the late showing of Iron Man 2.

We were sore from walking the next morning.

So...
We had a 4 hour layover in Newark, New Jersey, and we decided to make a bonzai trip into New York City for some pizza.

Train from the Station in New Jersey to Penn Station at Madison Square Gardens
Then 45 minutes to spend in mid-town
We walked down to The Empire State Building,
then up Broadway to Times Square (I saw the Chrysler building down a side street.)
Then, back down 7th ave. to 32nd St. for some New York Pizza before jumping back on the train to get back just in time for our flight.

I spent my last night here in Bermuda walking around the city of Hamilton. I wanted to walk off the beaten path to see the other side of things. I wanted to find the pictures that would never make their way onto a postcard.
I saw the homes and car dealerships, the dirty streets, the schools, the hardware store, the late night grocery store with families on scooters picking up some last minute groceries for breakfast in the morning. I watched the sun set behind the twin smoke stacks of a power plant and the steel skeleton new construction. I almost got hit by a bicycle with no lights. I found the Bacardi House with its colored fountains and bat-wing emblem. I saw a run down school play ground with barbed wire fences. I found a Catholic Cathedral from a two or three centuries ago. I watched the night-shift workers paving asphalt on the busiest corner on Front Street.
Tonight is a warmer night than most of the others I've experienced on this trip. It's actually quite beautiful.
There's been a lot going on. It was good to get out and just give my self some alone time to think and sing and pray... and wander. My feet are a little tired. I'm not sure how far I walked, probably seven or eight miles. Hopefully I'll sleep well this night before another long flight.

I've often been curious about my high metabolism. I feel like I live a mildly active life, maybe more so a moderately active life, at least based on national averages...
But, I didn't expect it to last so long. In high school I was told to just wait until college, in college they told me that it would catch up with me after I turned 21, then they told me that it happens when you get married, when that didn't happen, it was "when you have a major crisis in your life, no wait... after 24? after 30?
Am I going to have to wait for middle age before my body falls apart, I can't run around the block, and I puff up like a balloon?
I know that I'd like to be more disciplined with exercise, but I don't want the hassle. I enjoy running, as long as it's outdoors with changing scenery. But, I don't like how much time it takes out of my days. I'm sure that I would feel more awake and alive, and even sleep better at night. I've heard all those things and even experienced some of them myself.
But, still I don't do it.

However:
I do live at a high altitude.
I do prefer healthy, fresh food over junky greasy food.
I do occasionally walk to work.
I do hike or walk more than 2 miles at least every two weeks.
I do snowboard, mountain bike, motorcycle off-road or experiment with some other random extreme semi-athletic activity seasonally. But, none of these are ever done devotedly.
I do sometimes eat a can of tuna for lunch or a plain bagel for desert.
I did make my way through the developmental stages of my life eating just a whole can of tuna and half a loaf of whole wheat bread for lunch.
I do lose my appetite and eat only because I know my body needs the nutrients whenever I am overly stressed. And, yet, two days later I could easily put away 4,000 Calories without thinking much about it.
I do get called a Marsh-wiggle and a Garbage Disposal.

Last week I surprised myself by running 3 miles, cold-turkey, at a decent pace with just a little bit of soreness in the legs the next day. I haven't run that far in...

I don't know... months...

probably five of them.

Is that normal? It happens several times a year.

Three weeks ago, I noticed that my pants weren't fitting. (I had to buy a smaller size)
The solution suggested to me by an older sister was, "start exercising, do some lunges, try to build up some more muscle mass."

Most people roll their eyes or feel insulted when I talk about how hard it is for me to gain weight.
Sorry, I don't mean to be insensitive. I just don't like trying to pretend that it is not an issue that concerns me at times.

And, lately it keeps me wondering...

How is it that my metabolism is this way?
And, how long can it last like this?

Which brings me to what prompted the writing of this blog:

I was digging through the 3/4" Video Tape archives up here at Hume. Actually, they're not really archives, it's just four very large forklift pallets of cardboard boxes plastic wrapped together.
Anyway, I was looking for some old footage from when we used to do Olympic Summer Games in '88, '92, and '96. While I was in there, I found this video of Summer Testimonies.

Last night I had the privilege of being at the Hume Lake Vision Dinner in Orange County. The location was beautiful, quaint and rustic with a stunning view of Orange County that I didn't know existed. I managed to catch a glimpse of the sunset while we were setting up. And, then I also made a few panoramic images of the room where we were eating.

There were a large number of Hume Alumni, former Hume staff members who attended the dinner. Some of the program guys were down for a Youth Pastor's Summit earlier that afternoon. It was such a fun, energetic crowd.

I think I knew over half of the people there.
Dathan Brown was there. He was my counselor at Wagon Train years ago when I was just a little kid! Richie and Robbie Ferreira and Kevin Harold, and I were all in the same wagon together, Oklahoma, I think it was. Since we had come up as individuals without a church, Dathan, who was on SCS that summer was put in our wagon as our counselor. It was incredibly special to see him last night and to share that story, thanking him for being such a big influence in my life, so many years ago.
Also, in the room was Ron Rogalski, who produced the summer Hume musical At Any Cost which told the story of Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, and others who gave their lives in the jungles of Ecuador in the service of Christ. I decided to be a World Changer that week at camp, choosing to follow Christ wherever he would lead me.
It was amazing to have those two people there in particular, last night, but there were also so many other people there who have obeyed God, serving at Hume: Joel, Bobby, Mike, and Mike, Cliff, Jay... and so many others that I remember from past years.

Yay! The Electricity is Back On!

It's been over a week that I've been living without electricity at the cabin. It went out at the beginning of the big storm last week, came back on for about an hour a few days later, then went out again till this evening. Hume has a huge generator that powers the main buildings in camp, and all of the staff houses, but the Pearsey cabin is not on that power grid.
My usual routine when I come home for the evening has been to light an oil lamp, set it on the coffee table so that I can see the fire place, then I make a fire to heat the cabin. If I'm hungry, then I'll make some soup on the wood burning stove. I made quesadillas the first few days to use up all the cheese so that it wouldn't go bad without refrigeration. I stuck my milk outside in the snow when the power first went out. Then the big snow storm hit and dropped five feet of snow on top of my milk. It's still out there, buried. And, just a few minutes ago, part of the roof load slid down on top of the spot where it was buried. So, now there is like eight feet of snow on top of my milk. It's kind of funny.
I've spent most of the evenings reading by the fire, by lamp light till I feel tired enough to go fall asleep. I ran out of lamp oil last night and had to stop reading. I have more oil, but I had used it to fill a prop lantern for our summer theme promo video a few nights ago and forgot to bring it back home.
The it rained yesterday so the snow is all slushy in the roads, and the rest of it looks like it's just settled down from five feet to about four in most places. There are still twenty foot tall piles in places where the snow has been pushed to the side of the road, or shoveled out of somebody's front yard. Jocey and I shoveled out Sassy on Sunday. It took over two hours! And, we were both very sore the next morning. I was driving her around a little bit, but now the slush is too deep. I barely made it up the hill to Joce's trailer, so I've just parked her till it either freezes or melts completely. I would drive Shifty around, but I haven't had time to dig him out yet. He's all the way in back of the driveway, separated from where Sassy is by another twenty feet of snow six feet deep.
I don't mind walking. It's a new adventure every day, and I like that.

Finally! A Good Winter Storm

We finally have a good winter storm up here at Hume. I think it has been several weeks since it snowed at all. And, now, this...
It's supposed to snow all week long. There have been winter storm watch warnings and Hazardous Weather Condition bulletins warning us to stock up food and water for at least a week's supply. Higher elevations above 6000 feet were to expect up to 10 feet of snow! We're down at 5200 and probably won't get much more than 4 feet. It rained most of this morning, but it's snowing hard right now.

I worked all weekend. We had a three night camp of close 1,000 campers that just went home an hour ago. I stayed up all night working on the 2010 Vision Dinner video while Ryan Grant edited the highlight video for the winter camp weekend. I slept a little bit this morning, had lunch in the dinning hall with Jocey and the hundreds of staff it takes to make a weekend like this work.
Now I'm back in my cabin, all cozy with a cup of tea, sitting next to a warm fire, watching the snow fall outside my window. The storm is strangely silent except for the occasional, but regularly occurring sound of snow plows.

This X-ray is from November 3, four days after the crash. It's a front view of my left shoulder. You can clearly see the broken clavical. It shattered into two large pieces, left and right, and a large, floating piece in the middle. There were also a few other splinters of bone in there as well. Click on the image to see the full size. It's quite impressive, as you can clearly see the need for surgery.

This X-ray is from December 3, twenty-four days after the surgery. In this X-ray, you can see where they installed a zipper for easy access to the inside of my chest cavity, should there be any further complications. The plate, as I said before looks more like something from an Erector Set. I can't quite decide if the screws have Phillips heads or Torx six point star heads. They are, however, clearly self-tapping screws. I'm surprised that the ones sticking out through the bottom of the bone don't get caught on other soft tissue inside my chest cavity as I move around. Maybe there is just cartilage or something under there. If you click on the image to view the full size, you can see the now healing crack where the middle fragment was screwed to the Left and Right pieces. I still can't get over the fact that that thing is inside my body! It's weird to see a picture of it, so clearly, too! I've got other pictures of my hand and wrist, and a few other views of my shoulder. These were the best two pictures. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I think they are going to be my new desk top background on my work computer.

I started Physical Therapy on Wednesday. I negotiated down to only 1 visit each week instead of two, as it's so stinkin far to drive! They gave me a whole regiment of excercises that I have to do for about an hour twice a day. I understand now why so many people don't do all their PT homework. I feel like my mobility is already at about 90%. Though, my left shoulder is way, way higher than my right. They've been off since high school to varying degrees, depending on the day, but now they are really bad. My PT is confident that we will be able to correct most of that. He says it's caused by the muscles of my back being in a sort of permanent cramp on the left side. We'll see.
Meanwhile, I'm supposed to be using my arm like normal, as much as possible, just as long as it doesn't cause any sharp, bone-on-bone kind of pain. Muscle and tendon pain is fine, even good, but the other kind isn't. He said that I should be sore every day as I continue to stretch and work the muscles for the next four weeks. But, I should stop and avoid activity that causes the other kind of pain. I think my left arm and shoulder are going to be way stronger and more flexible than my right by the end of all this. I saw the Orthopedic on Thursday, I had more Xrays taken and I was so excited to post them here.
They made a CD for me of all the images that they have so far created of me with their Xray machine. I brought the disc home, put it in my laptop, and got asked by windows if I wanted to burn items onto the blank CD that I had just inserted. I was thoroughly disappointed. I called them; they apologized and are mailing me another disc.

So, instead of seeing it, I'll describe it for you.

The screws are pretty impressive, and they look like... screws.
In the picture they look like #8, ¾" philips head Sheet Metal screws from Home Depot. (Probably the stainless steel variety that come in the green bags.)
The plate looks more like a chain, or a series of OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOs all strung together, twisting slightly as it wraps around the contour of my collar bone. Actually, now that I think about it, it resembles a piece from an Erector Set that I had when I was a kid.
The main break is a visible crack with a screw horizontally through the bones, not the plate. (Imagine if you were to join two boards end to end by "toe nailing" them with a screw.)
The rest of the screws are at all different angles, looking like half of a double helix DNA strand.
I totally forgot to count them! But, in my memory there were seven.

The surgeon said that everything looks great, it is healing very well, and that I can start physical therapy now. Two times a week for four weeks! That's a little disruptive when you live an hour and forty-five minutes from town. Hopefully I can figure out a way to get instructions and do some of that up here on my own.

I'm out of the sling and feel like like I'm back to normal. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not back to normal, that I can't lift stuff, and that I still have to avoid hugs and slaps on the back and back packs, and pulling the blanket of my bed up with my left hand, and sleeping on my left side... those things hurt.

I can take a shower now.

I visited the orthopedic surgeon today.
They took at least twelve more X-Rays, bending my arm into painful positions to get a good view.

My hand is only badly sprained.
My scapula is fine, just badly bruised.
But, my colar bone is broken into multiple fragments.

On Monday I am scheduled for an hour and forty-five minute surgery to install a steel plate and screws to hold everything together.
Today, I did all the Pre-Op check up today, EKG, Blood Tests, etc.

the crash and what followed

I crashed on my motorcycle at around 5 pm. Allan, Karley and I were riding on a trail that we've been trying to explore across from Princess Meadow. Just about a mile out on the dirt and I caught a corner a little wide and hit some small, freshly cut sapling stumps that were hidden in the soft turfy needles and cut bushes. My bike flipped up, I think that I had both wheels off the ground, barrel rolled over to my left, then crashed down, landing on my left shoulder, with the motorcycle still between my legs, slightly above me. I must have landed on one of the stumps, cause it cut my jean jacket open quite cleanly just over my shoulder blade.
I found myself out in the middle of the trail, with the handlebars bent and dirt in my mouth. I got up quickly and tried to lift my bike when I realized that something was quite wrong. My body was making strange bone on bone clicking noises and the bike was not lifting. I felt my collar and sure enough, the bone was broken and overlapping with itself.

Karley and Allan rode back to camp and brought Karley's car to take me back, and Allan rode my bent up bike home for me. I changed out of my riding gear, we found Joce, stopped by the infirmary, then Karley drove us an hour and a half down to Taco Bell for dinner then to St. Agnes Hospital's ER. We didn't get done there till 11:30pm, and with a stop at Walgreens for the prescription, didn't get back to Hume till 1:30am.

I'm back up at the cabin now. I do have a broken collar bone, a "gnarley fracture" according to the nurse. They sent me home with a shot of morphine in my butt and a prescription of Norco, hydrocodone. I'll have to see a specialist and possibly go into surgery to get plates and screws on Monday. Meanwhile, I'm trying to sleep, propped up on a pile of pillows in my bed so that I don't roll over onto my shoulder. When I got back up here, I found that Allan had made up my bed and gotten a fire started so the cabin was warm. I'm going to miss having such a great roommate!

Thanks for praying for me. Please continue to pray as I see more doctors and learn to live these next six to eight weeks without the use of half my upper body.
My job just became way more difficult... everything just became way more difficult. I typed this all with one hand. It's amazing how important of a role that little thin bone has for the functioning of the whole body! I'm glad that I have good friends and live in a community where we can be learning these lessons together.

Adventures in Singapore

We split the team up into three different groups led by Rich, Allan, and me, then set off on the train into the city to find some dinner and adventure.

Ours was fairly unadventurous, with good Indian food on the Boat Quay, a walk along the river near The Fullerton Hotel in the Financial downtown (is there any other in Singapore?), and a quick visit to the Cultural Arts Center where a Ballet was under way. Then we left, Rachel, one of our team members behind in a bathroom and didn't realize it till we had made our way through a whole different mall and walked about a mile! We returned quickly and found her with a drink at a Chocolate Bar.

The students are out playing Au Fong right now! There's great weather... warm, not too humid. I can hear the frogs croaking all around me, the frogs, the crickets chirping, the occasional tuca lizard, the screams of the kids yelling MEDIC!!!, dodging swirling socks, and chears as they collect points for their team.

I've come down with a head cold, probably from the constant change of enviroment from the warm humid outdoors to the cold dry air con indoors.

We only have one more full day with these students. Pray that we make the most of every opportunity that we have!

We are just finishing with our first full day of camp. I'm lead counseling and running media stuff for Chapel. It's pouring rain right now, and it's warm, quite warm. The rooms have increadible air conditioners, which helps get rid of the sweaty humidity, but freezes me when I'm trying to sleep at night. I think my throat is getting a little bit sore.

Everything's going just fine here. The rooms are over crowded, but it works to have 320 students... I guess.

I wish I was a little more excited. I'm feeling a bit down and disconected.
I want to be more than just doing my job.

We just arrived in Singapore, at the Changi Airport. It's a huge, beautiful airport. Local time is 2:10 am on Wednesday the 14th. It's hot and humid outside. We wandered around for a while as a group, trying to figure out what gate and terminal our next flight will be leaving from. Now, we have six hours to kill.
I don't think we're going to leave the airport. We have a longer layover here at the end of the trip, so we'll head out into the city then.

We walked past a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Terminal 3. I think it was closed. Hopefully we can find an open one before we leave.

The flight was uneventful, the food was better than most of the food I've had in the last couple months.

Joce and I watched Ice Age 3, an episode of Top Gear, and The Proposal.
Kyle Kerchner is wearing a red white and blue headband and a brownish flannel shirt with the front pockets stuffed too full. Jocey likes her new backpack. Charles loves the free internet for his iPhone. Rich took Ambien and was knocked out for most both flights. I'm tired of carrying all the in-case-the-checked-video-equipement-doesn't-make-it-I-have-25-pounds-of-extra-equipement-to-make-it-through-the-week carry on back pack.

First-Ever, Slow-Mo Surfing in HD

For the upcoming BBC nature series "South Pacific," filmmakers rigged a TyphoonHD4 to shoot above and underwater HD in gorgeous slow motion.

(Be sure to watch that clip in HD.)

Shooting a frame rate 20x the speed of normal HD (I'm assuming that's somewhere around 480fps if the standard HD cam shoots at 24fps), this camera/documentary was apparently the first to capture the underwater spiraling vortices of huge waves at such incredible quality. Cameraman/technician Rudi Diesel calls one moment in this clip "probably the best shot" of his life.
I can't imagine the intensity of shooting surfers riding 12-foot waves from a vantage point directly beneath the action. But in slow motion, the scene is incredibly serene. [BBC]

I have to drive to San Diego early in the morning.
Early, as in a few hours from now, early.

Jocey and I were going to eat breakfast together at 6:15 before I left at 6:45.

Now Sarah and I are up in the Hume Studio at four in the morning trying to direct audio edits while TJ and Carl work their magic.

Sometimes I feel like the world is going to end, but really we couldn't ask for better people to be up late with working on stuff like this.
